Your Summer Mental Health Roadmap: How to Start an IOP Journey with Embrace U

Three teens, a boy and two girls, one wearing sunglasses, smile at the camera.

Summer is more than just a break from school—it’s a valuable opportunity to reset, recharge, and refocus on what matters most: your teen’s mental health. If your child has been struggling with anxiety, depression, or emotional challenges, Embrace U’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can provide the structured support and tools they need to thrive.

Starting mental health treatment can feel overwhelming at first, but we’re here to make the process simple, clear, and supportive from day one. Here’s your step-by-step roadmap to beginning an IOP journey with Embrace U this summer. Our programs are designed for adolescents (10 to 18 years old) who are struggling with symptoms of a mental health challenge, to the point where it’s impacting their ability to function. In many cases we’re the next step after trying one-on-one therapy, or a step down from an inpatient program. Participants come to our clinic for group and individual therapy at least three times a week, for up to six hours a day.

Step 1: Schedule an Intake Assessment

The first step is to connect with our team for an intake assessment, where we’ll learn more about your teen’s unique needs and determine whether IOP is the best fit. During this consultation, we’ll talk through:

  • Current symptoms and concerns
  • Academic and social functioning
  • Mental health history
  • Treatment goals

This is also a time for you and your teen to ask questions and gain a better understanding of what the program involves.

To schedule an assessment, call us at 855-388-HEAL or visit embraceu.com to get started.

Step 2: Receive a Personalized Treatment Plan

If IOP is recommended, we’ll develop a customized treatment plan based on your teen’s goals, challenges, and strengths. If your child’s symptoms are more severe, we may recommend partial hospitalization, which is more intensive and requires a 5-day-a-week commitment. Both plans include:

  • Group therapy sessions focused on coping skills, emotional regulation, and social confidence
  • Individual therapy for deeper one-on-one support
  • Family therapy sessions to improve communication and strengthen relationships at home

Our clinicians also coordinate with other providers—such as psychiatrists or school counselors—to ensure comprehensive care. You can learn more about our IOP vs PHP programs here.

Step 3: Begin Your Teen’s First Week in Treatment

The first week is all about building comfort and routine. Your teen will be introduced to their therapy group, meet with their individual therapist, and begin engaging in therapeutic activities designed to foster trust and emotional safety.

Here’s what you can expect during Week 1:

  • Orientation to help your teen understand what to expect
  • Introduction to daily group sessions, where they’ll meet peers navigating similar struggles
  • Check-ins with therapists to monitor progress and adjust the plan if needed
  • Guidance for parents, including information on how to support your teen at home

This first week lays the foundation for real progress in the weeks to come.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of IOP

To make the most of the IOP experience, preparation and support at home are key. Here are a few tips:

1. Create a supportive routine.
Set consistent sleep, meal, and activity schedules to complement the structure of therapy.

2. Encourage open communication.
Check in regularly with your teen about how they’re feeling and what they’re learning in therapy—without pressuring them to share.

3. Attend family sessions.
These are a vital part of the program and can help parents and teens develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

4. Be patient and consistent.
Progress takes time. Encourage your teen to stick with the process even when it feels challenging.

5. Stay connected with our team.
We’re here to answer questions, offer guidance, and support your family every step of the way.

Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Start Intensive Therapy

During the school year, packed schedules and academic demands can make it tough to prioritize mental health. In the summer, teens have more flexibility, fewer distractions, and more capacity to fully engage in treatment. Starting IOP now can help them develop essential skills that lead to a more confident and stable school year ahead.
